So they're useful for games taking place in the Galaxy where you're a bunch of spacers - which could be any setting, really - but when you get to the core Star Wars experience of the Force and the Jedi, they take on an entirely new aspect of threat. They're also anti-Jedi, on both a physical and a religious level, in that they're capable of beating Jedi one-on-one and they challenge the very core of Jedi beliefs (life creates the Force, life cannot exist without the Force). The Vong are homogeneous - they're a singular enemy - yet they're also far more alien than anything else in the Galaxy Far Far Away and are a threat to every walk of life, from Jedi to spacer to colonist to senator. Which is fine, until you realize that, over time, the entire history of Star Wars is slowly becoming Jedi vs. The villains for the NJO series of books were going to be the Sith.
